What is Bruxism?

Bruxism (clenching and grinding) is a condition where you unconsciously grind and clench your teeth at daytime or nighttime which can have serious effects if left untreated such as jaw discomfort, tooth fracture and tempromandibular disorders. This is caused usually due to stress, anxiety, sleep disorders or malocclusion. Treatment options for bruxism include customized nighttime Mouth guard or BOTOX injection.

Bruxism Signs & Symptoms

  • Attrition ( flattened tooth)
  • Pain/ sore cheek muscle (facial pain)
  • Cracked, chipped tooth or filling
  • Headache
  • Gum recession
  • Limited mouth opening

As a first line treatment for bruxism, Dr. Aljonaidy recommends mouthguards. Mouthguards are dental appliances that cover your teeth helping treat conditions from teeth grinding to sleep apnea. Customized mouth guards provide effective protection to your teeth.

By wearing mouthguard at night while sleeping, the teeth are prevented from touching, which reduces the likelihood of the masseter muscle contracting excessively and becoming overworked. This helps prevent development of pain associated with bruxism.

Adapting to wearing a mouthguard can be challenging for individuals with severe bruxism which can complement exploring alternative treatment options or combinations such as BOTOX injections.

Botox for Bruxism – Grinding and Clenching

BOTOX is an FDA-approved treatment for bruxism, headaches, and migraines, commonly utilized by neurologists and pain specialists. It works by relaxing specific facial and jaw muscles, alleviating soreness associated with bruxism and reducing pressure on the teeth to prevent tooth fracture, pain or headaches. Additionally, BOTOX helps "reprogram" the brain, discouraging overuse of these muscles and minimizing future clenching. Dr. Aljonaidy often prescribes BOTOX for bruxism alongside medications and mouth guards to provide comprehensive treatment.

Botox Procedure at Blossom Dental

Dr. Aljonaidy’s approach involves a careful examination of your head, face, and neck to pinpoint the muscles causing your issues, typically focusing on the Masseter, Medial and Lateral Pterygoid, and Temporalis muscles associated with bruxism.

By injecting BOTOX, she impairs the overused muscles to teach your brain to stop misusing them, ensuring you can still eat and chew properly without risking dental damage.

The treatment takes under 30 minutes, allowing you to return to your routine immediately. The full effects manifest within three days to two weeks, prompting a re-evaluation after the initial dose to adjust as needed.
